After starting my training in Coventry I moved to Birmingham and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1990 at Starbuck Stone, which was where I met my current partners in Holder Blackthorn.
I left to work in industry which helped me gain a much greater understanding of the day to day pressures faced by businesses in raising finance and keeping customers and suppliers happy. I missed the more varied work of an accountancy practice and so decided to move to a small practice in the Jewellery Quarter. Our clients were mainly owner managed businesses across a variety of sectors. We later decided to merge the practice with another firm who also had a base in the East Midlands.
After working with them for a couple of years I decided that I preferred working in a smaller team where I could devote more of my time to helping clients and joined Holder Blackthorn in 2009.
The majority of my clients are owner managed businesses who do not have their own finance director and we at Holder Blackthorn step into that role – I feel we can really contribute to our clients’ business by attending the directors meetings and providing up to date financial information, thus enabling them to make good decisions and plan for the future.
I sit on the Committee of the Birmingham and West Midlands Society of Chartered Accountants and am Deputy President this year. We look after the West Midlands members and organize regular seminars and events.
In my spare time I am trying to learn Spanish as I thought this would give my brain a break from figures! I enjoy socializing and eating anything I haven’t cooked!
